The International Air Services Commission (the Commission) has received an application
from Qantas requesting an allocation of 232 seats of passenger capacity per week on the Cook Islands route. The capacity will be utilised by Qantas’ wholly-owned subsidiary Jetstar Airways Pty Limited. It is planned that Jetstar will operate an additional service per week between Sydney and Rarotonga from 4 July 2023. Qantas requested the capacity on the following basis:
- the allocation is requested for a period of five years from the date of the determination;
- the capacity will be fully utilised by 31 July 2023;
- the capacity may be utilised by Qantas, or Jetstar Airways Pty Limited or another Australian carrier which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qantas; and
- the capacity may be used by Qantas to provide joint services with any wholly-owned subsidiary and by any wholly-owned subsidiary of the Qantas Group to provide joint services with Qantas.
Invitation for other applications
In accordance with Section 12 of the International Air Services Commission Act 1992, the Commission invites other applications for capacity on the route.
The closing date for making an application is 27 February 2023. If you are intending to make an application, please inform the Director of the Commission, by email (at iasc@infrastructure.gov.au), as soon as possible.
Update: 09-March-2023
On 7 March, the Commission issued the attached Determination [2023] IASC 108 allocating to Qantas 232 seats of capacity on the Cook Islands route, subject to certain conditions. The capacity may be used by either Qantas, or its wholly-owned subsidiary, Jetstar Airways Pty Limited. The determination is valid for five years commencing from the date of issue of this determination.
